The Next New Thing

Currently, the hottest new technology is the 3D technology. Every movie and TV show try to make themselves as 3D as possible and at the same time with high definition. So, I start to image that there is one day when people can communicate with each other in 3D.

For example, people will use a watch as their cellphone. With one button away, we will call the person we want to call. If the person answers our phone, his / her 3D real time image will appear on the top of our watches (cellphone). Of course, our real time 3D image will also appear in others’ watches. Therefore, people will see our gesture and our emotion while we are talking on phone. In addition, blind people also will benefit from this phone feature, since they can use hand language for making a phone call.

Another 3D new media will be the Internet Network. I love doing online class, but sometimes people have to meet to get detail knowledge and information from professors. In this way, only few courses are able to present as an online mode. However, if we have the 3D class room, the problem will be solved and students and professors can meet together even at home. In this 3D class room network, student will open a 3D camera, and this 3D camera will capture the image of the student and show it to the professor in a room. Also, each student will see each other and are able to talk with each other because they are within the same network.  This new media will save a lot of time for students who have to travel from a far place to school.

Overall, new media is an amazing technology that increases people’s capability and efficiency. I believe all I think above will be achieved someday.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I had did some research for the wiki contribution. I found out that it’s very interesting when people talking about privacy in the Internet. Some of people think that they don’t have any privacy in the Internet since the Internet is a many-to-many network. Everyone who has access to the Internet has the opportunity to reach any of person who also has access to the Internet. Therefore, these people believe that there is no privacy in the Internet at all, so why do they care about privacy in the Internet. They also believe that as long as they didn’t do anything bad, they will be fine. However, the truth is, even though these people didn't do anything that will harm others, there is still has some chance that they may get into trouble because of use of the Internet (Johnson, Deborah G.; Computer Ethics). For example, people who like to shop online may easily expose their private personal information and these information was used by some people to commit crimes. At this time, the information’s owner may be taken to the policy and waste their time for explaining innocent. Hence, they still get hurt or be harm even though they did not do anything bad.

These are the information that I had collected for the wiki contribution. Basically, I am going to focus on the opinion from people’s view to the privacy in the Internet. Later, I will find more information relate to this topic and submit the work on the wiki together.

About My Term Research Paper

I did a lot of research on my term paper. Three of them are scholar contents that I found them from database of our college’s library and Google Scholar. These contents have very important points that relates to my topic. I used some of their point to demonstrate my ideas. Also, I used some definition from a book to strength the relationship between new media for social networking and the Internet. Then, I used a lot of examples to show that how public the people are over these social networking tools.  I found these examples from some news and journal websites which is very helpful to me.

From the research, I found out that even though we think we are secure by using those private setting, somehow those people who we don’t want to share information with will discover our private content. The most important thing to keep private is not to upload some sensitive information.

I choose this topic is because I heard the news of a student who jump into river because his roommate use social networking tools to reveal his private life. I was shocked by this news and I understand the important for people to concern about the privacy problem over these new media.

New media is the most popular technology that people use often to do social networking. It is a require equipment for people to keep up with the current social trend. My paper will alarm people to notice the need of establishing regulation on using of new media, and the moral people need.

Overall, I had learned a lot from writing this term paper. The most interesting thing I found is when I made an outline for my paper, but my paper is absolutely not following the outline. I found that the outline can motivate me to easily start my paper, but there is many places in outline are incapable on how to present my topic. it’s really a very interesting and educational project for me.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Privacy and confidentiality have become a primary issue that people are dealing with at the time when new media has a great impact on people’s usual life. People like to use social networking sites to commute with each other. However, by using these sites, the privacy of users’ own information is very doubtful. For example, People use face book to spread their news by putting up words and pictures. Sometimes, users may want to upload some information that only share with friends, so they use the private option that face book has provided to users. In other hand, face book still reserve a right to check on the information that users had uploaded as private information. Let’s assume if a people who work for face book has noticed this private information that somehow related to him, he may spread this information in some different ways other than using social networking sites. This assumption raises a question on the “privacy” option that face book claims. In addition, face book also required to share inferior information with FBI or other police departments to check on criminal activities. Some legal but private information may have a greater chance that being seen by more people other than the people that users originally would like to share with. This just one example of how “public” that these social networking sites indeed are.

Further more, there are many shocking news about how new media has lead to an innocent people to death. For instant, the recent shocking news, that a teenage boy had jumped from a bridge into Hudson River and died, had alarmed people that the dangerous of using new media in an improper. The roommate of the boy’s friend used Skype to record the sexual encounter of the boy with another guy, and then the roommate also twitted to about 150 followers about it and asked people with iChat to watch this video. These are all the popular new media that people use often to commute with each other. However, some people use them to reveal another people’s privacy and their actions always have a great impact on the victims since new media is a wide range spreading tools. The tragedy of boy is not the only alarm to tell people that privacy is a serious problem in new media. There are many other things had happened before that relate to the use of new media. I think that we should establish some critical laws on prohibiting the use of new media as soon as possible that prevent the happening of more tragedies.

Advice to Baruch College

Baruch College has already been using new media for a long time. As we could see from the home page of Baruch College, we have twitter, face book, LinkedIn and blogs to make announcements. Also we use these social networking tools to connect people together, like joining the events.

However, we still have ways to improve Baruch College by using more new media. I will suggest setting up an Android App or Apple App for people visiting our home page.  Now, more and more people prefer use cell phone (iPhone, Android Phone, Blackberry) to check emails and some updated information. Most of time, people need to use an URL address to access this information. With the rapid development of applications on phones, the use of application on phones has become a main stream of using new media. The use of applications become so poplar is because sometimes it’s hard for people to find a computer, and they are able to do anything with a cell phone that has different kinds of applications. Therefore, we should have a Baruch App that people can use to access information that relates to Baruch College’s most updated announcement, and to check our blackboard, e-sims and email account. This Baruch App will create more convenience for student, which will save their time for searching for a computer station.

Experience in using Twitter

This is my first time of using Twitter. And I found that it’s really interesting and kind of a new way to communicate with people.

By contrasting to the BB Discussion Board, I found out that Twitter is more convenience than BB Discussion Board. Because once I found out who tweeted me immediately by login into my account (There is a notice to tell you who tweeted you). However, in BB Discussion Board, I have to check it one by one to see if any replies. In other hand, Twitter can be used in Mobile phone which I can tweet at any time and place while BB Discussion Board cannot.

Despite the disadvantage of using BB Discussion Board, it is more useful in comparing with Twitter while I need to post a long question for getting help on solution. Since I have to limit my words within 140 characters (include space and punctuations), it’s hard for me to post these kind of questions or discussion to get help. In this occasion, I would prefer to use BB Discussion Board instead Twitter.

Further, Twitter is so similar to an in-class discussion. Because I will get short response from my classmates after I tweet my feeling on the article I had read. This happened also when I do in-class discussion. Still, there is a difference between these two ways on discussing an object. That is I will not know when people will reply me. Twitter is an online communication tool and people don’t need to be face-to-face, so that we can reply people anytime we want even we had read other people’s tweets. In-class discussion will be different; people will expect me to reply him/her quickly and timely. In addition, I may forget what he and she talked about before, and I will be reminded in Twitter by the historical records in Twitter.

Overall, each of discussion way has different usage and some common similarities. I think we should not limit on using a particular tool that will limit our efficiency during discussion.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

What are different ways these virtual worlds can be used?
When people mention virtual worlds, they probably will be reminded that these are the worlds which will let them to experience the life that they have never been through before or not capable to do. The first common way to use these virtual worlds is to play games, like EA Games’ Sims serious or some online games, to experience a second life.Similar to the using of virtual worlds to experience a second life, a toy company Webkinz creates toy worlds for children to play instead of real toy object (Hindo, 2007). This reveals that the virtual worlds can be used like a real object anytime people want via internet. The other common way that people used the virtual worlds to communicate with each other, like discussing project or do something special together without going out.

There is a special way for using the virtual worlds, which is building the environment or people that, had been disappeared long time ago or because of some reason. For example, the Hotel Chelsea is present as the old times in a virtual world which is created by Mr. Brown (KNAFO, 2009).

The most interesting one is when the virtual community Second Life says that it is “seeking to tap into that market by creating a new tool that allows businesses to have virtual meetings on their own computer networks” (Tutton, 2009). This new idea will enable employee to have a real meeting with each other by using their avatars within the company’s network.

What are the pros and cons?

Pros: The using the virtual life in business not only reduces the time and cost which people would spend on traveling, but also increases the efficiency and capability of the operation process. Like IBM's chief technology officer for Europe Rashik Parmar said: "Not only did we save travel time, but because the environment was so engaging, a lot more ideas came through” (Tutton, 2009). In other hand, the virtual life enables people to experience the things that they had not experience before. The people who have some disability may not able to swim freely in water, but they can do it in the virtual worlds. Students also are able to experience the old age life that thousands years ago, so that they might have stronger feeling when study the history.

Cons: The worst thing in using of virtual worlds is the high degree of deception that happened. Virtual worlds are the worlds that all people are anonymous. It’s hard to distinguish the bad or good of one person by just talking to him/her in virtual worlds. There is a big probability that people often act differently from their real life. The reason is because most of time people seek a way to express the deep desire, which cannot behave in real life, though the virtual worlds. So, people will pretend themselves as another person and do things that may hurt other people. Also, some people may intentionally to deceive other people for money or other illegal activities in the virtual worlds. Therefore, sometimes, the virtual worlds like a trap for users to enter into dangers.

How do virtual worlds foster creativity?
Virtual worlds create an environment which is fulfilled with creativity, because people have to design their own avatars before entering the world. I will choose face book’s restaurant application as an example. At first, users have a choice to change their avatars’ hair style, skin colors, dressing, and other appearance of avatars.  In this way, the creative passages have been opened to all users. After users create their avatar (owner of the restaurant), they will need to do some decoration for their restaurant. This process is like the process of decorating your own home—chose the wall color, flood quality, chair style and so on. In order to make your restaurant to be more attractive in comparing with other users, people have to increase sales by learning more and more receipt and buy other different decoration items to re-design their restaurants. Therefore, users will do improvement all the time by the time passing to coordinate with the change of seasons, holidays, and factions. Most of the virtual worlds would enable this specialty to attract more users since people like to show own ideas to others.

What do you think the future of virtual worlds will look like?
The virtual worlds will be more and more common. We may be able to work at home in the future by just entering into the network of companies to do things and attend meetings.  We may also do online course more efficiently by just entering the network of our courses by using avatars. Further, maybe we are able to use some device to enter into the virtual worlds with most reality like the movie, Avatars, to experience different life. Overall, old saying, nothing is impossible.

Socail Networking

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?
Social networking technologies now have a great impact on human being’s action and decisions.  There are many ways that people and corporations can use these networking technologies to achieve their goal.

Corporations begin to seek potential candidates on twitter, blogs, and face book and so on because of the users’ popularity (HOLSON, 2009).  Sometimes, these corporations will post available position on their twitter to look for candidates who are really interesting in their companies. Like Holson said in her article, “Comcast, General Motors and JetBlue Airways, has become the hottest new corporate job among the Twitterati”.

Further, corporations want to increase the customer relationship by using these social networking sites, like twitter. For example, AT&T use twitter to announce their technical problem on twitter so that customers are able to check why the service in not available quickly (Reardon, 2009). The using of twitter is really helping corporations to show their responsibility on their customers.

In addition, people will use these social networking sites to express their feel on some products for giving feed backs to the corporations. For example, Wal-Mart encourage their workers to express freely and sometimes critically on the products that Wal-Mart is selling via blogs, so that Wal-Mart will get the most recent and appropriate feed backs right away and prepare for not damaging corporation image (BARBARO, 2008).

The last one I am going to talk about the use of social networking technology is people now would prefer to search stores information or dinning places via these sites. The reason is these sites will represent the real customers’ feeling that people will trust in.

Overall, there are many different kinds of ways that people and corporation to use these technologies and these technologies works effectively most of the time.

What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific. Is there a "dark side"? Make sure to include your opinion of the way these technologies might evolve in the future
The benefits of these technologies to society are the expanding of human beings’ networks. Before the time of these social networking sites, the area of people to meet new people is very limited.  People will only know people within their neighborhood, work spaces and schooling time. And once people left these social areas, they will lose contacts with each other by the passing of time.  However, things change when these new social technologies come out, people get contact with each other more easily and convenience. People even are able to find jobs and expressing feelings via these social networking sites.

Although these technologies give human being’s a big help, they still negatively affect people somehow. First, they may make people to lose the real things to do to keep personal relationship. People may not able to handle with people in real life since sometimes the manner in internet may different from the real life. I think that people should not put too much attention online and bring self more often to experience the relationship in the real world. Second, these technologies may make people to lose more privacy. The internet has become public more than private. People can track who you are and where you live by tracking the IP address.  Employers will spy on employees’ social networking sites in order to find a reason to fire them and so on.  Sometimes, people will think these actions are unethical, however, I think people who post their private information online should have the idea that other people would get this information easily, because internet is no longer private is a fact. They should rethink before they put their information online.

Therefore, every technology has its positive side and negative side. It depends on how people are using it and thinking on it. If people think the technologies are safe, then they will do whatever they want, or just to be careful when using these technologies.

Social Networking Sites

Face Book
Face book is the most famous social website currently. I remembered that I registered an account while I just entered in Baruch. And the peer leader told us that face book is a must in social networking. The first impression of face book for me is confusing. There are a lot of different link, like walls, news feed etc. I had no idea what these things are. Gradually, when I get used to face book, I found that the main activity in face book is posting short journals and let people to respond you. The funniest thing I thought during the period I used face book is the restaurant game thing that you actually can exchange food with your friends. Overall, face book is a pretty good social website for friends networking together.

My Space
I have a y space account before I opened a face book account, and I think my space is much easier to use than face book. Since, my space generally is a website that people use to post journals, upload photos and share with friends. It is more like blog since it doesn’t have much function other than posting. And I like to use it more than face book because the view of my space is more “clean” than face book. Overall, I think my space is a good social website that I used more often now.

Friendster
Be honestly, before I did this assignment, I don’t know this social networking site. So I had to register one. The home page gives me a feeling of HP because of the background is so familiar with the pictures that HP used. Interestingly, this site seems come from yahoo. After my explored on the site, its function is similar to face book with games and short journals posting. But there is one thing that I don’t like is the face book ad is too big on the left hand side.

Plurk
I think this is the social network site that will be popular very soon. Once you enter into the site, the color of orange gives people a feeling of fresh. The most interesting part in this website is it is not a simple networking site like others. It has a big time line banner on the top of the page and shows every word your friends posted in compliance with the time line. And when you traced back what you wrote and what people wrote, it is really interesting. This is an social website that be so new and special to me in overall.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis
The biggest difference between blogs and wikis is the ownership of contents. Writers own the contents that they wrote in their blogs. The contents have kind of copy right style encrypted when writers post it up, because writer’s name always follows the contents. However, in wikis, writers don’t own the contents they write, since everyone who has access to internet has the right to edit the contents. It’s more likely that the contents are belonged to Wikipedia, and writers are just volunteers that contribute their ideas and knowledge to this website.

The second difference is the way people do when they agree or not agree with the contents on blogs and wikis. When people disagree with the writers in blogs, viewers will comments beneath the contents. In other way, people will edit the contents in Wikipedia directly.

The third difference is wikis have informational contents, while blogs have journalism likely contents. According Gerry, blogs is tool for people to write every thing that happened on the writers or thoughts about what happened globally. Further, people use wikis when they need to obtain some information rather than ideas to do something.

One similarity I found between blogs and wikis is people must do them online. These two ways to share information and ideas with people are found when more and more people get the accesses to Internet. This online style makes people that are able to respond to what people writes quickly and freely. Also, this style also helps people to share information with a greater range of people rather than a small area around the writers.

Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world
The emerging of new media has become a main stream in today’s networked world. This main stream creates a converging point for many different kinds of businesses and becomes the center of a large web of networking. It’s really important to have this convergence in the world because it connects people here by writing journals and comments and reduce the obstacles for people to get contact with each others. In addition, people are depends on these new media now to do every thing. It’s hard for people to give up I think.

How can blogs be used for collaboration?
All the blogging websites are having a similar feature that is people can comment on writers’ articles. Commenting becomes a tool for people to collaborate with each other. When an article is posted online, all the people who have access to Internet will have a chance to read and comment on the contents. In other way, the writer of this article can reply or comment on readers’ comments. Further, readers can comment on other readers’ comment also. In this way, people have a communication with others. Sometimes, the communication is one-to-many, many-to-one or many-to-many. This is how blogs is work for collaboration.

Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?
I think wiki can be used for people to do group projects. Usually, college students will get group projects that need a lot of information from many different sites. However, they may not have the time to gather together and discus about it. At this time, after assigning of different jobs, they can start to post information they get to wiki, and people can revised it anytime when they feel the information is wrong. In this way, project can be done without wasting time to gather people together.

Social Networking: A purposeful loss of privacy

In my research paper, I am going to talk about how people are losing their privacy with the development of new media.

On the economical perspective, the area of online information has been becoming a new way for people to make money. For example, when people buy books from the bookstore website, the website will store people's buying preference and may sell some information to the booksellers so that the booksellers are able to reach people who had bought books via this website. However, this kind of behavior seems to be unethical without customers' consents. Customers may feel so annoy when they receive different kinds of messages from some unknown sellers. Furthermore, the action of selling customers information had been invaded customers' privacy deeply. This kind of situation may make people lose the credibility to online shopping and decline the value of online stores.

On the technological perspective, new media is being developed in a rapid way. People like to upload their information online, and sometimes people have to upload their real information if they want to use certain online function. However, the security of these information are not secure at all. The reason is hackers always have the way to hack in people’s computer or the database of a certain website. This may create people’s doubt to whether or not to upload their information via Internet, because of the fearing that expose their private information.

On the moral perspectives, the using of social networking tool like Facebook has obviously been giving people a chance to show themselves in public. There are many examples are showing the loss of privacy by using Facebook. The most famous one is the lady who was an employee of Delta Air line, but was fired later when she post one picture which she wears the Delta Air line uniform on her own blog. She claims that she is innocent because she is using her own time to do blogging and the company has no rules to limit her behaviors during her private time. The important thing in this example is not about if the lady is innocent. The main point is: does the company (employer) have the right to check employees’ social networking sites or tools, and judge them because of their blogging or photos? Is this ethical? What about employees’ privacy on Internet?

Actually, one characteristic of  new media is publicity.New media is more like a huge social networking tool. When people step in the area of new media, they should have the mind that they may lose their privacy. This is the same as when people walk out of their house, they will lose their privacy because many people will watch on them purposeful. The above are the general ideas that I am going to do research on my term paper.

Describe New Media

In a simple definition, new media is the new tools to broadcasting or communicating around the world.

The following are examples of new media:
Online Videos (examples: YouTube, Mega Videos, Hulu, etc.)
Social Networking Websites (examples: Face book, Twitter, Linked In)
Instant Communication Tools (examples: Aims, Messenger, etc.)
Blogging Website: (examples: Blogger and Word press)
Pictures (examples: Flicker, Photo Bucket, etc)

How do we distinguish “new” from “old”?
There are two ways to distinguish “new” form “old”

The first one is: being replaced and doing replace
Nowadays, new media is continuously replacing the old one. For instance, online video gradually kicks Television set and cable out of the market. Most of time, people will prefer to watch videos (includes dramas, films and shows) online by using computer rather than to watch a TV show at a specific time in front of the TV. This example shows how new media is replacing old media. (HOLSON, 2008)

From the example above, it also tells us how to distinguish “new” media from “old” one. That is when people start to use another media to perform the same function as the media that people used to use, the media people used to use becomes the old media, and the media ,that replaced the “used to” media, becomes mew media.

The second one is: the environment of using media
In order to use old media, people have to make sure themselves have a certain time available and are able to arrive at the specific location by using a special device.

In other hand, new media are usable at anytime, anywhere and by using some convenience and portable devices.

For example, when people want to watch “Sex and the City”, they have to be available in front of TV at a specific time and place. This is the traditional (or old) way that people used to watch this drama. However, with new media (i.e. Internet), people can use iPhone to watch the drama on YouTube at anytime or anywhere by saving the videos in iPhone or using public wireless Internet.
